Presentation Available--Dr. William Lucas's EIG Presentation!

Dr.
William Lucas of The Cambridge-MIT Institute key-note presentation, "Best
Practices in University-Industry Collaboration" from the 2006 EIG
(Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Growth) Symposium is now available. The
sold out third-annual EIG symposium was held November 6-7, at the Hotel
Marlowe in Cambridge, MA.
Dr. William Lucas of the Cambridge-MIT Institute (CMI)
presented CMI's multi-year study. Using an enduring partnership of Cambridge and MIT, and an
extended network of participants, the CMI from 2000 to 2006 undertook the
task of studying how to improve the effectiveness of knowledge exchange
between university and industry.

Leader in Retail Transaction Systems needed to revitalize a flagging
retail transaction system product offering. The market and product
segments of the client were showing sever signs of commoditization. Lower
cost, generic offerings from Asia were capturing
increasing share of the market. Opportunities for differentiation seemed
limited.
Product
Genesis decided to apply its Opportunity Discovery methodology. The first
group of modules provides a framework to capture voice of the customer,
stakeholder, thought leader and lead-user to gain thorough insights into
market and user, needs and dynamics.
The
client implemented a range of software and receipt lifecycle focused
innovations within its retail transaction product line, creating
higher-value-add offerings that commanded premium pricing in the
marketplace. They regained, and then overtook their previous market share
position in the first two years after launch, driven by the pull-through
from the faster software upgrade cycle. By changing the client's
perspective on their role in the market, we were able to avoid a price
competition death spiral and achieve a sustainable competitive advantage.
