Innovation requires investment, both in time and money. Businesses are interested in the return on investment and with aligning activities with corporate goals and values. Innovation alone does not necessarily provide this return or alignment. To acheive the return or alignment you need to think broadly in terms of Strategic Innovation.

Strategic Innovation is the act of aligning innovation activities with the strategic goals of the corporation. Strategic Innovation is a way of improving the odds that the innovation investment results in an outcome that flows from identified market-driven opportunities and creates a lasting value.

Strategic Innovation may be driven from a number of starting points, but the end goal in all cases is to move beyond incremental improvement. By understanding technology and market trends, existing and emerging customer, and stakeholder needs in target and peripheral market segments, the Strategic Innovation equation can be developed.

Case Study: Value Genesis: Infusing the Voice of the Customer into a Fortune 500 Company

  

A Commercial Division of a Fortune 500, Diversified Equipment Company was seeking to move from a number three position to leadership in its target market. This was a significant challenge because the client was at best stagnent and in some cases losing market share in key categories.

Using elements of the Value Genesis framework, we started with comprehensive interviews of end users. We followed this process at no less than thirty customer locations, compiling some ninety hours of video footage. The customer needs statements were mapped to the video footage from which they were derived and loaded into an interactive database that allowed instant recall of the appropriate video clips expressing specific unmet needs.

The project resulted in more unified communication within the organization; the pinpointing of key obstacles to market-leading product development; and a series of innovative new product concepts, which rapidly moved into the development pipeline in support of the new market strategy.
